2843.  RUHRCHEMIE, A. G. [Active Iron Catalyst for the Synthesis Process.]  German Patent Appl. R 106,544 R469, filed Dec. 9, 1939 (Cl. IV d-12 0).  FIT Reel K-20, frames 232-240; PB 70,211; TOM Reel 177, frames 1,695-1,703; Meyer transl. PC-S-II, Fischer-Tropsch, vol. 1, chap. 50, 1948, p. 124.

Highly active Fe catalysts are obtained by promotion with at least 5% of the oxides of Ca or Mn and by precipitation from mixtures of Fe salt solutions with Ca or Mn salt solution by means of alkali hydroxide.  The catalysts are preferably deposited on granular carriers such as kieselguhr, CaO, MgO, or diatomit.  After the precipitates are washed they are impregnated with solutions of alkali hydroxide.  To speed up the induction time small amounts (2-5%) of Ni, Co, Cu, or mixtures of these metals are added.  Maximum gas contractions and oil yields per m3. of synthesis gas are reported with greatly increased active catalyst life.
