Gas is passed at atmospheric pressure and 130°-200° over a catalyst comprising Ni, Fe, Co, Cu, Pt, or Pd, or oxides of these, the catalyst being regenerated by substituting a stream of N2 or N oxides; the gas flows for 80-100 sec. and the regenerating stream 25-35 sec. in alternation.
