2826. -----[ ROLLMAN, W. F.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Process and Apparatus for Contacting Fluid Solids With Gases.  United States Patent 2,575,297, Nov. 13, 1951; appl.. filed Apr. 30, 1949, Serial No. 90,588;  9 claims (Cl. 260-49.6).

Process and apparatus are described for converting CO and H2 to liquid hydrocarbons and oxygenated products by contacting CO and H2 under synthesis conditions, with a fluidized catalyst, in a vertically elongated reaction chamber  having a bottom section in the form of a truncated inverted cone.  A part of the catalyst is withdrawn continuously in vertical downwardly flowing streams from the periphery of the lower portion of the reaction zone, while separate streams of the catalyst suspended in the synthesis gas are passed upward along inclined paths equal in number to the vertical streams with which they are united from the bottom portion of the reaction zone.  The improvement in the process comprises passing the last named streams tangentially into the lower portion of the reaction zone, thus imparting to the gases suspension a cyclonic flow pattern within the reaction zone.
