Catalysts such as Co. Ni. or  Fe deposited on carrier substances, which may be formed of kieselguhr and which are pretreated by heating their soluble constituents to render them insoluble. are used.   the catalysts being precipitated from their salt solutions with alkaline-reacting agents and applied to the prevented carrier substances, so as substantially to prevent soluble components from entering the solution from which precipitation is effected.
