 When the contact catalysts used in CO+H reactions cannot be regenerated by ordinary means, they are dissolved in an acid.  The solution is filtered to remove the carrier, and then by partial precipitation with, for example, Na₂CO₃. the contaminants are removed.  After filtering, the catalyzing substance is precipitated, care being taken that the carrier is added toward the end, lest the carrier, usually SiO₂ be attacked by the alkali.
