2777. -----. [RIBLETT, E. W.] (Hydrocarbon Research, Inc.).  Synthesis Gas.  British Patent 646,532.  Nov. 22, 1950; appl. Filed in United States. Apr. 11, 1947.  Petroleum. vol. 14, 1951, p. 81.

Object of this invention is production of  synthesis gas at high pressure, with efficient use of the hydrocarbon and O2 and almost complete elimination of C formation.  Normally, gaseous hydrocarbons are reacted with O2 of 98% purity in such proportions that the resulting gas contains less than about 2% of CO2 by volume, in a reaction zone maintained at 2,100°-2,500° F. and under a pressure of more than 200 p.s.i.  The contact time is 3-10 sec.  Under these conditions, the O2 is practically all used, and unwanted side reactions with formation of C are virtually eliminated.  The O2 content in the product is rarely more than 0.01%.  The reacting gases may be previously heated to about 600° F. before entering the reacting zone.
