H₂ and an oxide of C in suitable proportions are passed over a suitable catalyst at an elevated temperature and pressure, compounds formed are removed at a lower temperature, a portion of the residual gases is again passed over the same catalyst and another portion of the residual gases is similarly passed over a 2d catalyst, and compounds formed by each such treatment are removed at lower temperatures.
