Catalyst such as Ni for the hydrogenation of oils, fats, and waxes is allowed with a noncatalyst metal such as Al, the alloy is treated with NaOH, in amount insufficient to remove all the Al, and the product is washed and treated with H2 under raised temperature and pressure.
