In producing a liquid fuel generally suitable for the same uses as gasoline, water gas or Dowson gas is mixed with a gas rich in hydrocarbons, especially those of the C2H2 series, and the mixture is passed first over a hydrogenation catalyst, then over a dehydrogenation catalyst, and finally over catalysts to effect polymerization of the C2H2 hydrocarbons.
