H2 is produced by passing steam and CH4 in a ratio of 2-4:1 over granular CaO in an amount equal to 2 ½ times the weight of the C in the CH4. The reaction zone is held 1,500°-1,650° F. and 20-50 atm.; and the inlet temperature should be at least 100° F. above the outlet temperature. The CaO is regenerated by heating to 1,750°-1,800° F.
