2693. ------. [PIERCE, J. A., AND RICHARDSON, R. W.] (Standard Oil Development Co.). Process of Preparing a Group VIII Metal-on-Aluminum Catalyst. United States Patent 2,481,238, Sept. 6, 1949; appl. filed Sept. 24, 1947, Serial No. 775,975; 3 claims (Cl. 252-466). Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950, p. 824.

Al is plated with Fe, Co, or Ni, with or without addition of a promoter, by reacting it with a salt of the metal. Example: A 20% solution of FeCl3·6 H2O was prepared. 1 l. of this solution was mixed with 160 gm. of granular Al. During the course of the reaction, H2 was evolved. After 15-20 min. the ferric chloride solution was drained off the metal, which was rinsed and the H2O removed. The catalyst is preferably preserved under iso-octane or other volatile, nonreactive hydrocarbon solvent. The granular Al cores were plated with a porous, active coating of metallic Fe. 1 literature ref. and 1 United States patent cited.
