Compounds such as MeOH are obtained by reaction of C oxides and H2 at 320°-500° under 200-800 atm. pressure in the presence of a catalyst such as oxides of Fe, Zn, and Cr together with S, Te, P, Si, B, As, Sb, or Bi.
