Presence of the product alcohol or aldehyde inhibits gelation of the Co soap catalyst in the synthesis of aldehydes from an olefin, H2, and CO. Diisobutylene, 1% Co stearate, 4% nonylalcohol, at 300° F., 3,000 p. s. i., and a 1.2:1 vol. ratio of H2:CO at a rate of 8,920 cu. ft./per bbl. of feed gave 61% conversion to oxygenated product, mainly nonylaldehyde.
