Hydrocarbons, alcohols, and other compounds, particularly MeOH, are made from gaseous mixtures of CO, H₂, and CO₂, which contain at least 2 vol. of H₂ for 1 vol. of CO, obtained by passing a mixture of 1 vol. of O₂ with at least 2 vol. of steam over charcoal heated to about 700°.
