Solid fuel is gasified by O₂, H₂O vapor, and heat to give a mixture of CO, H₂, and CO₂ suitable for the synthesis of alcohols, especially MeOH. The temperature of the gas producer is kept < 750°, and the proportions of O₂ and steam are not more than 1 vol. of O₂ to 2 vol. of steam.
