Solid fuel is gasified by O2, H2O vapor, and heat to give a mixture of CO, H2, and CO2 suitable for the synthesis of alcohols, especially MeOH. The temperature of the gas producer is kept < 750°, and the proportions of O2 and steam are not more than 1 vol. of O2 to 2 vol. of steam.
