PATENTS
The Co to be converted as in United States Patent 2,477,553 (abs. 2207), is supplied as a toluene-soluble salt of an organic acid free of elements other than C, H, and O and nonbenzenoid unsaturation, and reaction is effected in an inert hydrocarbon solvent. Carboxylic acids with 6-22 C atoms are preferred. Thus, 50 ml. of a solution (3% Co) of Co nonanoate in C6H6-MeCOEt (4:1) and 2 ml. of a 6% solution of (I) in MeCOEt was autoclaved at 120° -125° and 2,500 p. s. i. of CO and H2 (1:1) to give a quantitative yield of (I) in less than 10 min. Co naphthenate in toluene-MeCOEt (4:1) and Co 2-ethylhexanoate in C6H6MeCOEt (6:1) similarly gave quantitative yields, the latter at 3,000 p. s. i. and 130° . Without (I) as promoter the latter run gave only 35% (I) in 3 hr. at 130° . |
