The preparation of Co(CO)4 (I) from CoCO3, Co(OH)2 or Co basic carbonate and CO in an inert organic solvent proceeds without an induction period if preformed (I) (0.25-10% based on other Co compound used) is present. The other Co compound, best dispersed on a carrier, is suspended in the solvent, preferably a ketone or an ether, containing the (I) as promoter, and heated with CO at 80° -300° and super-atmospheric pressure. Thus 200 cc. MeCOEt, 10 cc. of 6% solution of (I) in MeCOEt, and 14 gm. CoCO3 precipitated on 6 gm. diatomaceous earth were shaken and heated with CO and H2 (1:1) at 2,600 p. s. i. and 110° -120° for 10 min; the reaction is evident at 110° by the pressure drop. The cooled decanted liquid contained 10.2% (I). CoCO3 in iso-Pr2O with 4% (I) promoter gave as good a yield in 10 min. at 110° as in 1 hr. at 150° . |
