2207. ------ [MCKEEVER, C. H.] (Rohm & Haas Co.). Promoter in the Manufacture of Cobalt Carbonyl. United States Patent 2,477,553, July 26, 1949. Chem. Abs., vol. 43, 1949, p. 8108.

The preparation of Co(CO)4 (I) from CoCO3, Co(OH)2 or Co basic carbonate and CO in an inert organic solvent proceeds without an induction period if preformed (I) (0.25-10% based on other Co compound used) is present. The other Co compound, best dispersed on a carrier, is suspended in the solvent, preferably a ketone or an ether, containing the (I) as promoter, and heated with CO at 80° -300° and super-atmospheric pressure. Thus 200 cc. MeCOEt, 10 cc. of 6% solution of (I) in MeCOEt, and 14 gm. CoCO3 precipitated on 6 gm. diatomaceous earth were shaken and heated with CO and H2 (1:1) at 2,600 p. s. i. and 110° -120° for 10 min; the reaction is evident at 110° by the pressure drop. The cooled decanted liquid contained 10.2% (I). CoCO3 in iso-Pr2O with 4% (I) promoter gave as good a yield in 10 min. at 110° as in 1 hr. at 150° .
