Fe catalyst is removed from the reactor before substantial deposition of C has occurred. The catalyst is treated with steam for 4-12 hr. at 800°-900° F. then heated in oxidizing atmosphere 825°-900° F. The treatments are controlled so as to prevent complete removal of the C but to increase the O content of the catalyst. The C content should be approximately 5%, the O content 25%. The catalyst is then returned to the reaction zone. Reduction, regrinding, and regrading are not necessary. 1 foreign patent and 2 United States patents cited. MCALEVY, A. See abs. 873. MCATEER, J.
