Synthesis gas is produced by cracking CH₄ and like hydrocarbons with O₂ at high temperature in presence of incandescent coke and subsequently gasifying the coke at a lower temperature with O₂ and steam so as to yield an easily removable granulated slack. The gas produced is withdrawn in such a manner as not to upset the equilibrium in the high-temperature zone.
