Antiknock properties of gasoline hydrocarbons can be improved and the gum-forming constituents therein removed by the use of surface-active inorganic substances such as activated bleaching earths. The operation is carried out in 2 steps; in the 1st step the gasoline is treated with bleaching earth at temperatures 250°-400°. The improved gasoline is then treated <200° with some of the used bleaching earth from the 1st step to remove any gum-forming constituents still present. The temperature in the 1st step is gradually increased as the improving effect of the bleaching earth on the octane number depreciates. |
