Gaseous product from the hydrogenation of CO is cooled, and the normally liquid hydrocarbons are removed by condensation. The mixture separates to a gas phase, a 1st liquid hydrocarbon phase and a 1st aqueous phase, all containing organic oxygenated compounds. The 1st aqueous phase is fractionated. The overhead fraction consists predominantly of low-boiling organic oxygenated compounds substantially free from organic acids. The bottom aqueous fraction contains organic acids substantially free from other organic oxygenated compounds. An intermediate aqueous fraction contains hydrocarbon-soluble substances and higher boiling H2O-soluble organic oxygenated compounds. The 1st liquid hydrocarbon phase is contacted with this intermediate aqueous fraction and stratified. A 2d hydrocarbon phase containing a diminished proportion of organic oxygenated compounds and a 2d aqueous phase containing a diminished proportion of hydrocarbon-soluble substances are withdrawn. 6 United States patents cited. |
