Apparatus comprises a cooling device that includes at least 5 rows of cooling tubes superposed 1 row on the other at a small distance apart and having at least 5 tubes in each row, together with flat plates arranged perpendicular to the tubes and positioned at a few mm., for example, 7 mm., from each other, the tubes extending through each of the plates, and the plates and portions of the tubes extending therethrough being enclosed in a jacket. Cooling liquid is circulated through the tubes. The solid contact masses are arranged between the plates.
