Synthesis gas mixtures containing H2 and CO in a ratio < 3:1 are prepared by passing a hydrocarbon gas, consisting essentially of CH4, with an oxidizing gas containing a major proportion of CO2 and a minor proportion of steam, 1st over a catalyst consisting of MgO at a conversion temperature 1,400°-1,800° F., and then over a 2d catalyst comprising an Fe-group metal at 1,200°-1,500° F. No C formation on the catalyst occurs in this conversion. ------. See abs. 439, 440, 441, 442. |
