In the manufacture of lubricating oils by the condensation of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weight with C6H6 or its homologs, the chlorinated hydrocarbon is 1st mixed with the aromatic hydrocarbon in the absence of a condensing agent, the mixture is cooled to cause the separation of solids, which are removed, and the residual liquid is then subjected to condensation in the presence of a condensing agent, if desired, with the addition of a further quantity of the aromatic hydrocarbon. Among examples, a mixture of chlorinated paraffin containing 22% Cl with C6H6 is cooled to -5°, the solids that separate are filtered off, more C6H6 is added, and the mixture heated with AlCl3. |
