Process for the preparation of aliphatic carboxylic acids such as propionic acid from a hydrating agent such as H₂O, CO and an olefin such as C₂H₄ is carried out in the presence of an added condensing agent containing BF₃ and not more than 5-mol. proportions of H₂O (suitably 1-3 mols.).
