CO₂, formed in the synthesis reactions, is treated with H₂ to form CH₄ and H₂O vapor. The CH₄ is returned to the fresh feed entering the synthesis gas generator. The H₂ requirement is met, in part, by the H₂ content of the fresh feed synthesis gas, amounting to 2 mol. H₂ per mol. CO when operating the generator on CH₄ and O₂. The heat from the reaction can be used to provide steam or for heating the reactants. The synthesis catalyst may be used for the H₂-CO₂ reaction as well. 4 United States patents cited.
