Aliphatic ketone, such as methyl ethyl ketone for the production of methyl-sec-butylacetic acid, and H₂O are heated in the liquid phase with CO at a temperature < 350° (suitably 150°-165°) and under a pressure at least of 10 atm. (suitably 700 atm.) in the presence of a liquid catalyst comprising BF₃ and H₂O.
