1978. ------. [KYOWA CHEMICAL ENTERPRISES CO.] [Preparation of Aliphatic Saturated Alcohols From Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen.] Japanese Patent 162,927, Mar. 15, 1944. Chem. Abs., vol. 41, 1947, p. 5142.

Mixture of 1 part each of Mn, Cu, and Zn hydroxides, 0.2 part Fe2O3, and 0.125 part KOH (the oxides or carbonates of each may be used, Cr may be substituted for Cu, and another alkali metal for K) is dried into bean-sized lumps with the addition of kieselguhr and then dehydrated at 400° and reduced in H2 gas just before use. The CO2-H2 mixture, CO2 25.5%, is heated in the presence of this mixed catalyst at 400° per 150 atm. The resulting liquid, after distilling off the H2O, refining with CaO and KOH, and desiccating, is fractionated into 39.5% EtOH, 33.5% PrOH, 8.3% iso-BuOH, and 18.7% MeOH. The total alcohol yield is 53 cc. from 3.45 1. of gas mixture.
