In preparing natural siliceous materials such as kieselguhr for use as adsorbents, or in regenerating such materials after use as adsorbents, the materials are calcined in apparatus to which heating or inert gases are supplied in such a manner that the materials are continuously or intermittently loosened or whirled or carried in suspension by the gases. The materials may be preliminarily ground and pretreated by known methods.
