Oily products consisting chiefly of oxygenated organic substances such as higher alcohols and aldehydes, together with MeOH, are obtained by leading a mixture of H₂ and oxides of C, in which the ratio of H₂ to oxide is at least 2:1, over a contact mass at high temperature and pressure. The contact mass contains no Fe, Ni or Cr, or only very small quantities of these. Examples mention catalysts of ZnO in fused K₂Cr₂O₇ and CuO with PbO.
