1945. KRAUCH, C., AND PIER, M. (I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G.). [Preparation of Valuable Organic Compounds.] German Patent 671,606, Feb. 10, 1939; appl. B 121,376, filed Aug. 21, 1925 (Cl. 12 o-1.03). FIAT Reel AA-90, frames 1,512-1,514; PB 70,275; Meyer Transl. PC-S-II, Fischer-Tropsch, vol. 6, chap. 167, 1949, p. 10; Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939, p. 6338.

Coal tars, mineral oils, and resins are treated with a mixture of H2 and CO; for example, water gas, under high temperature and pressure in the presence of MeOH-forming catalysts (except alkali or alkaline earth compounds) alone or used with Mo, W, or Cr, to give organic products. Thus, vaporized tar from brown coal is treated with a mixture containing CO 10% and H2 90% at 200 atm. and 450° in the presence of a ZnO catalyst to give a mixture of MeOH and C6H6. Another example mentions steel containing Cu or Al as the catalyst.
