Hydrocarbons are obtained in better yield from CO and H₂ in the gas phase on Fe catalysts under normal or increased pressure by continuously reversing the direction of flow of the synthesis gases over the catalyst each ¼ hr. or more (1-3 hr.). The flow periods are preferably set up at the beginning in short ¼-hr. periods and then extended during the course of the synthesis to several hr.
