Carboxylic acids, alcohols, and similar substances are obtained by oxidation of hydrocarbon mixtures, which in turn are produced by catalytic reduction of CO with H2 at > 300° C. These mixtures are treated with solvents capable of dissolving constituents having branched chains but not affecting components having straight chains. The mixture is freed, or nearly freed, of branched-chain components, and the residue is oxidized in the usual manner. |
