1807.  ------. [KAUFMANN, H., AND WELZ, H.] (I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G.). [Motor Fuel From Multibranched Alcohols.] German Patent Appl. I 74,066, OZ 13,916, filed Jan. 13, 1943 (Cl. IV d-12 o). TOM Reel 15, bag 3,043, item 18, frames 2,419-2,422; TOM Reel 20, item 167, frames 2,682-2,685; Meyer Transl. PC-S-II, Fischer-Tropsch; vol. 2. chap. 101, 1948, p. 82.

Multibranched alcohols, obtained by the catalytic reduction of CO with H2 under pressure, together with a crude gasoline obtained from the low-temperature distillation or carbonization of hard or brown coal, are passed in presence of H2 or gases containing it over hydrogenating catalysts under hydrogenating conditions and raised pressure but with the avoidance of cracking. An antiknock motor fuel is obtained by operating under a moderate total pressure, 40-50 atm., and a low partial pressure, 0.5-3 atm., in the presence of catalysts consisting of the sulfides or oxides of metals of groups 6 or 8 in admixture with oxides of metals of groups 2-5. In an example, an almost theoretical yield of a gasoline is obtained with an octane number of 73, or 91 after addition of 0.12% of lead.
