1790. ------. [KALBACH, J. C.] (Hydrocarbon Research, Inc.). Conversion of Carbonaceous Materials. Canadian Patent 487,256, Oct. 14, 1952; appl. filed July 21, 1948, Serial No. 577,438; 5 claims.

Coal in a fluidized state is simultaneously hydrogenated and carbonized in the presence of H2 substantially free from CO at pressure 300-750 p. s. i. g. and 1,000º-1,500º F. The carbonaceous residue is reacted with O2-containing gas and steam to produce a mixture of CO and H2. H2 is separated from the mixture and used to hydrogenate more coal. The CO separated from the mixture of H2 and CO is mixed with the gaseous product of carbonization to produce a high caloric gas useful as fuel.
