Fe-Ni catalysts are used that were obtained by precipitation at temperatures < 40° and at a pH value of <8 during the precipitation. Precipitation should take at least 1 hr., preferably 3-12 hr. or more. It can also be performed stepwise. Simultaneously, alumina or Ag₂O is precipitated as activators. The catalysts are distinguished by a very long life.
