Catalysts for the production of MeOH and other compounds from CO and H₂ are prepared by heating a mixture of ZnCO₃ or basic ZnCO₃ and a Cr compound which may be ZNCO₃ or basic ZnCrO₄, in which case the heating takes place in the presence of H₂ or the reacting gases. Examples are given in which (1) AnSO₄, Na₂CO₃, and Na₂Cr₂O₇ are heated together, and the precipitate is washed.
