Apparatus for carrying out processes involving the use of gases containing CO at high temperatures and pressures is constructed of Fe in all parts except those maintained at temperatures 150º-250º. These are constructed or coated with metals such as Cu, Al, or special steels, which do not form metal carbonyls under the working conditions. CO is excluded from the apparatus and is preferably replaced by H₂ while it is being heated or cooled.
