Sulfo-oxidation of aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, such as the products of CO hydrogenation that are free from olefins and aromatics, with a mixture of So2 and O2 or air, is catalyzed by radiation with photoactive light. The reaction is promoted and a more pure product is obtained in the presence of anhydrides or chlorides of some lower aliphatic acids or ketenes such as the anhydrides of acetic or propionic acids.
