            In removing CO from gases obtained by the gasification of brown coal, using a cuprous oxide salt solution under pressure, there are added to the solution small amounts of synthetic alcohols with more than 12 C atoms in the molecule or mixtures containing them, particularly such as are obtained by the action of CO and H₂ on olefins and hydrogenation of the products, or by reduction of CO with H₂ at medium pressures in the presence of catalysts of the Fe group at temp, < 250º.  The alcohols are used in the form of an aqueous emulsion, the emulsifying agent being prepared by the introduction of ethylene oxide into the alcohols themselves.
