            Mixtures of hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds, particularly alcohols, obtained by the conversion of CO with H₂ in presence of Fe catalysts, often are contaminated with Fe compounds, which become troublesome.  The trouble can be alleviated by heating the mixture with a strong acid such as HCl, H₂SO, and if desired after the addition of H₂O, separating the aqueous layer from the purified product. The Fe compounds go into solution in the H₂O and are extracted thereby.  The color of the mixture also is improved thereby.  The Fe content of the purified product is reduced from 0.1% to not >0.005%.
