            Crude primary products of the hydrocarbon synthesis from CO- and H₂- containing oxygenated compounds are hydrogenated under such conditions as are the most suitable for the conversion of carboxylic acid esters into alcohols.  Example: A primary product of hydrocarbon synthesis from CO and H₂ is treated with CO and H₂ in proportion of 1:1 in presence of a Co catalyst at 150º and 200 atm. until no more of the CO-H₂ mixture is taken up.  The conversion mixture is trickled at 200º, at the rate of 8 1, per hr. through a high-pressure tube of 25 1 capacity filled with a Cu catalyst on silica gel activated by Cr and Ba, into which H₂ is passed at 200 atm. pressure.  The product issuing from the tube is colorless and consists mainly of alcohols, which can easily be sulfonated to alcohol sulfonates.
