In a further development of the process for producing O-containing aliphatic compounds in accordance with German Patent Appl. I 70,009 (abs. 1373), MeOH may be substituted by 1 of its homologs in the liquid phase at temperatures >100º, but < the critical temperature of the alcohol being used at the times, and at a pressure >300 atm. The conversion is carried out with CO and H₂ in presence of a catalyst consisting of a carbonyl-forming metal of the 8^th group or its compounds. An example describes the use of ethyl alcohol as the raw material.
