In the preparation of plasticizers (Gkeitmittel), such as are required in the production and processing of synthetic resins or plastics, the acidic constituents in oxidation products obtained by the oxidation of aliphatic hydrocarbons melting >40º and containing from 30-70% of acidic constituents, are converted into salts of multivalent metals without separation of the nonacidic constituents. Example: 80 parts ZnO is added with stirring at 150º to 1,000 parts of a hydrocarbon mixture melting at 80º, which has been produced by the hydrogenation of CO and then oxidized to an acid number of 70. The temperature is then gradually increased to 200º and an additional 35 parts of ZnO added. The reaction is complete with in 3 hr. or more and can be recognized by the transparent appearance of the mass. The cooled mass can be ground without difficulty.
