Parts of the apparatus having a temperature of 180º-200º, and preferably also the parts having a temperature of 150º-180º or 200º-250º, are made of or lined with material with which CO does not react to yield Fe(CO)4. The parts at temperatures >or< the limits specified may be made of Fe, since Fe(CO)4 is not produced at temperatures beyond those limits.
