            Lubricating oils are produced by polymerizing or condensing liquid or solid unsaturated hydrocarbons of the aliphatic, aromatic, and heterocyclic series by the aid of AlCl₃ in reaction vessels constructed of materials that do not exert an unfavorable catalytic influence on the reaction.  Vessels of Cr-coated Fe, Cr, Cr-alloyed steels, or Cr-Ni-alloyed steels are preferred.  AlCl₃ containing <5% of unsublimable residue is also preferred.
