Lubricants are obtained by treating olefinic hydrocarbon mixtures with selective solvents through polymerization of the H₂-rich fractions obtained thereby using catalysts from the Frieded-Crafts reaction such as AlCl₃ or BE₃. The conversion products of CO and H₂ b. 250º-450º are passed over H₂O-splitting catalysts, treated with solvents, and polymerized.
