Low-boiling-point and unsaturated hydrocarbons are obtained by treating gaseous mixtures of C oxides and H₂ at elevated temperature and pressure with catalysts that contain metals of the 8^th group of the periodic system, together with alkali metal compounds and small quantities of S, Se, or Te in a free or combined state. Liquid products of olefinic character thus obtained can be used to prevent “knocking” in motor fuels for the manufacture of lubricating and insulating oils by condensation with use of AlCl₃, B Fluoride, or the like, or for the production of benzene hydrocarbons, alcohols, glycols. Gives examples with details of procedure.
