British Patent 506,064, May 22, 1939; appl. filed Sept. 21, 1937. Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939, p. 9620. Derivatives are prepared by reaction of CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst consisting wholly or mainly of a sintered metal of the Fe group to which is added an alkali compound that in aqueous solution has a neutral or acid reaction and is virtually undecomposed at up to 1,000º, such as, alkali halides KCl or KBr or NaCl or NaF, and phosphates such as NaH2PO4 or KH2PO4. Other activating substances, such as Ol2O3, SiO2 compounds of Cu, Ti, Mn, W, Mo, Cr, Th, Ce, Zr or other rare earth metals may be added in minor proportions. The products are mainly benzines, but middle and heavy oils, paraffin, gaseous hydrocarbons of more than 1 C atom, MeOH or higher alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, or acids are formed also. In an example, Fe powder obtained by the decomposition of Fe(CO)5 is mixed with 5% of KCl and 5% of H2O, heated, pressed into pills, and treated with H2 for 4 hr. at 850º; a gas containing CO 35% and H2 64% is converted at 330º and 15 atm., benzine being mainly formed. |
