British Patent 502,542, Mar. 20, 1939: appl. Filed Sept. 20, 1937. Chem. Zentralb., 1940, I. p. 967; Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939. p. 7528. Conversion of CO and H2 into hydrocarbons of more than 1 C atom or O derivatives of hydrocarbons, for example, alcohols such as MeOH or iso-BuOH, ketones, aldehydes or acids, is effected in a liquid medium with a sintered metal of the Fe group as catalyst. The preparation of the catalysts is described in British Patents 484,448 (abs. 1288). 490,090 (abs. 1168) and 496880 (abs. 1285). The liquid medium may consist of liquid or fusible hydrocarbons. In an example, Fe powder obtained from the carbonyl is moistened with H2O4 pressed into pills, heated to 850° for 6 hr. in a current of H2, and then charged into a vessel containing products of a prior conversion and consisting manly of hydrocarbons b. 150°-350°: equal volumes of CO and H2 are led upward through the vessel at 330° and 40 atm., the vapors pass to a separator at 100° where middle and heavy oils are condensed, enough being returned to maintain the liquid level: further cooling separates the benzenes. The residual gas may be returned or caused to react in a 2d vessel after separation of CO2 and of unsaturated hydrocarbons for conversion of polymer benzine.
